At Home: Warming Up With Gold

Yes, I'm pretty much obsessed and in love with gold. It's always been my personal metal of choice in terms of jewelry, and I love it as an accent in home decor. I have a decent collection of golden accessories throughout my home, and they really add a lot of interest to a space. Gold is warm, rich, and has an earthiness to it that cannot compare to silver. Gold is back, and it's more modern, chic, elegant, and classy than ever. With gold, a little goes a long way. It pairs wonderfully with any color scheme or decorating style and adds that hint of glamour. If you think your home is looking a bit dull, try incorporating a few gold accents here and there. It will easily brighten up any space. Little things like replacing cabinet knobs with gold-tone hardware will make a huge difference. Display a gold vase or trinket on your coffee table or bookshelf, mix some bronze picture frames in with wood and other metals - gold, used sparingly makes a statement without overpowering.

Here are my latest gilt obsessions:

1. Gold Flatware set from West Elm : This will be my new set of formal flatware! I love the modern, clean lines and how they can work for almost any occasion. (Plus, you can't beat that price!)

2. David Stark Wood Slices dinnerware set from West Elm: Faux bois + gold? YES please.

3. Cleo Table Lamp from Crate and Barrel: I love the organic look. Gold just makes it look so decadent.

4. Ball vase by Kelly Wearstler: This has a modern vintage look that will stand the test of time.

5. Athena tray from Jayson Home: Another chic yet simple shape. I'd use this as a jewelry tray.

6. Moreno Nesting tables from Crate and Barrel: So functional as a bedside table or accent in a living room.

7. Duluth pull from Restoration Hardware, and Mother of Pearl knob from Anthropologie: Subtly add some gold tones into your space by changing out your cabinet knobs and pulls. I just purchased the Duluth pull from Restoration Hardware in antiqued brass, and it looks phenomenal on our new cabinets (stay tuned for a feature on this).

8. Wallpaper from Hygge and West - use this to line the walls of a small space like a powder room, or line the back of a shelving unit for a hint of texture and contrast.

Some Thoughts, Thank You's, and a Feature in Style Me Pretty

We ended 2011 determined to make 2012 even better. Well the year has taken off with not one, but two sweet surprises - I really couldn't ask for more! Two lovely features within a span of a week - Smitten and Style Me Pretty nonetheless! Oh my! Now brace yourselves for a little sappy out pour of emotions...

I'm floored and honored that we've been getting so much love from these wonderful wedding blogs and magazines. These are my first features in highly celebrated online publications, and I cannot express how it makes me feel. I started this business only two years ago, with nothing more than a dream and a desire to put my creative juices to good use. It was not easy, I cannot lie. I basically dove in with no clue, no money (no joke), no staff, and not one contact in the industry. All I had were ideas, my education, and the most supportive and loving family and set of friends anyone could ever ask for. I was (still am) a very new stay-at-home mom (to the sweetest and most adorable baby girl), so alongside learning how to get a business started, I was also learning how to be a parent. My days were filled with diapers and deadlines. More often than not, each day was/is a struggle and involved a lot of poop (more from dealing with people and situations than from actual diapers). Can't tell you how much blood, sweat, and tears goes into each of my projects. I'm still a one-woman show with occasional "hired" help, so you can understand how even the littlest things mean so much to me. Anyhow, my point is - I'm pretty sure that's how it's going to be from time to time. And while I will grunt and groan when times are difficult, I'll have the little things like a thank you from a past client, or my baby's hugs for cookies I made her from scratch that make it all worthwhile. I see the recognition from the likes of Style Me Pretty as little milestones in the growth of this business. It sure has come a long way, but there's definitely more room to grow and improve. I have tons more to learn and experience, and I'm looking forward to it!

A wise man once told me: Do something with all your heart, focus on doing it right, and help people along the way. You'll never fail and you'll eventually get the pat on the back you deserve.

Before anything else, I just want to say thank you so much for all the love, support, and appreciation!

Total pinch me moment! One of the weddings I designed is featured in Smitten Magazine's January/February '12 Issue! I did the event design, print goods, and florals for Griselda and Chris' vintage black tie affair. This was such a fun and elegant wedding for a super sweet couple. I'm so honored to have worked alongside top wedding pros. Kevin Chin's photos are absolutely gorgeous! Check out the entire spread on page 48-59 here, and my previous post with more photos here.

Featured: Special Delivery Baby Bash

The wonderful Amy Atlas of Amy Atlas Events (pioneer of the "styled dessert station") just featured this very special baby bash I designed on her blog:

I designed the details for this special party for two of our closest friends John and Julie, who had twins on the way. Instead of a traditional "shower", they wanted to host their own fun backyard bash to celebrate their upcoming arrival. It was a casual and intimate get-together with friends and family. I designed invitations, print goods, florals, and a guestbook dessert station. We wanted a theme that was gender neutral, chic, and not overly cutesy. What better way to celebrate the upcoming arrival of twins than with a theme that evokes that feeling of receiving something special? Hence, "Special Delivery"! I had a cake designed to look like two stacked packages, which served as the centerpiece of the dessert station. More mini packages (devil's food cakelettes in disguise) were stacked on kraft-wrapped packages. The amazing Krizia Mendoza really knocked our socks off with the cakes! They were gorgeous and extremely delicious. They looked so real that guests had to ask if they were edible!

I baked some "letters and envelopes" cookies that I displayed in a vintage train case. And for the favors, guests took home mini chocolate chip cookies packaged in teeny tiny envelopes.

The dessert station also doubled as a guest book bar. We had everyone write letters to the twins that would be "mailed" to them on their birthdays. They decorated them with stamps and markers, and dropped the cards in a vintage mailbox. It was a fun and crafty activity that everyone enjoyed!

I created simple floral arrangements of blue and white hydrangea, white ranunculus and mums, and red tulips in milk glass urns and aqua bottles to balance all the "cute" details with something chic. To add some interest, I created some flower paper fans in fun and colorful patterns as the backdrop to the dessert station.

John and Julie hired a fabulous caterer that set up a delicious Mexican food station. We were all so stuffed, I was pretty glad we kept the dessert station small and simple.

One super cute detail: I added John's very own vintage toy airplane as part of the decor. He's had it since he was four!

Non-Floral Thanksgiving Table Decor

The holidays are here and it's the season of entertaining and celebrating with family and friends! For most of us that already have our hands full, this time of the year can be stressful and extremely exhausting. A lot of work goes into planning and prepping for a dinner party. More often than not, we fore go a lot of little details in order to save time and money.

I'm a big fan of budgets, keeping costs down, and finding ways to get things done faster and more efficiently. I also believe though, that these are not valid reasons for not being able to put a little something special into an event - be it the smallest intimate dinner date for two or a cocktail party for a large crowd. If you are running short on time, or have no room in your budget - pick one element that you can easily pour a few minutes into. In my case most of the time, this ends up being the centerpiece or table decor. It sets the tone, creates conversation, and makes the dinner table more inviting. While I love flowers, they are not the end-all and be-all of table decor. For a recent pre-thanksgiving get-together with friends, I simply rounded up items I already owned to dress up the dining table. I used leftover fabric as a table runner and lined up some silvered and mercury vases on top. With no time or budget for fresh flowers (not to mention the host is deathly allergic to them), I added some texture and color using inexpensive moss covered rocks and pine cones. For some sparkle, I lined the tables and mantle with a lot of candles set in glass hurricanes.

A Very Warm SF Welcome

I'm a sucker for great packaging! There's nothing like receiving something that was wonderfully put together - where the presentation is just as lovely as what's inside. The extra details count and make the recipient feel extra special. Ever since I was little, I've been enamored with boxes, bows, ties, bags, wrappers, and adornments. I would take on the challenge of designing and wrapping all of my mom's holiday presents - from her baked goodies to friends to corporate give-aways for the family business.

When a client recently asked me to design a couple of welcome gifts for friends, I was over the moon excited to come up with something fun, modern, and thoughtful. She was planning to host a few of her closest friends over at her San Francisco vacation home and wanted to greet them with personalized gift bags. We came up with "Warm Welcome" kits filled with local heart-warming SF goodies : chocolate tea, sea salt and turbinado sugar covered almonds, and a pair of "conversation" chalkboard mugs...all perfect for the chilly fall weather. I kept things clean and simple - using a shiny white flip-top box (which folds flat for travel), created custom SF-inspired tags and cards, sketched some golden gates on the mugs, and wrapped it all up with a simple black grosgrain ribbon.

Wishing you a cuddly cozy almost-thanksgiving weekend! I hope this inspires you to create some unique and fun presents for friends and family this year.

It's that time of the year again! The ultimate dress-up day - Halloween! I'm continuing the tradition of creating DIY costumes for my little one. Here are the two past year's:

Building the Birkin:

I have gotten a ton of emails from people asking if I could sell these or give them tips on how to make them. People, I do this as a hobby and craft activity that I enjoy. I'm really sorry but these are not for sale! As for the DIY tutorials - these pieces are pretty much like "sculptures", and I myself have no clue how I get from point A to point B sometimes. I can provide you with a list of materials and a general idea, but the steps are pretty hard for me to explain (sorry, I'm just really horrible at giving instructions, period.). I don't use a pattern and basically just create as I go.

Weddings: Vintage Vineyard {Part II}

The bride's bouquet was made up of cream English garden roses, ranunculus, and scabiosa. Isn't she one gorgeous bride?

The bridesmaids carried petite bouquets of lavender roses, lisianthus, sweet peas and lavender while the flower girls carried bunches of lavender.

The dapper groom wore a bout of cream spray roses, while the groomsmen's consisted of scabiosa pods and misti.

Weddings: Vintage Vineyard {Part I}

This classic wedding took place in a gorgeous winery in Livermore, California earlier this Spring. I created the florals, print goods, and styled the event. It was a lovely, intimate ceremony and reception (about 80 guests) filled with lots of personal details.

Here are the photos my hubby took (isn't he a natural?!):

I created vintage inspired tag escort cards and displayed them on a found wood fence that I spruced up with decorative nail heads. I carried out the tag design into the signs and table numbers and used black velvet ribbon to add some luxe. The bride added her own vintage birdcage to hold cards and letters.

For the ceremony programs, I designed mini booklets that coordinated with the rest of the signs and escort cards.

We kept the flowers loose and romantic, with lots of texture. I used Garden roses, hydrangea, lisianthus, ranunculus, queen anne's lace, anemones, scabiosa, sweet peas and lavender in purple and cream hues. Milk glass vases in different sizes and shapes added the vintage charm the couple wanted.

While the ceremony took place outdoors, the reception was held inside an old barn wine cellar.

I styled different areas with my own personal collection of vintage decor.

The bride added her own Anthropologie monogrammed mugs, which we used as vessels for more florals.

Weddings: A Blush Oceanside Affair

Here's a pretty little wedding from a few weeks ago that took place at the Monterey Plaza Hotel. The wedding color of choice was pink, and the couple wanted us to somehow weave some ocean elements into the design. We combined blush and cream English garden roses with milk glass, mercury glass, aqua bottles and added touches of seashells, pearls, and wood. The result was a lovely blush oceanside affair that was romantic and chic, with just the right amount of glam.

We chose khaki silk linens, dusty rose napkins, and gold chiavari chairs. The colors came together beautifully without drowning out the space with too much pink.

Fall Flowers

Hello Fall! I just love this time of the year. I look forward to warming up with some hot chocolate and wrapping myself up in a large cozy sweater all year long. The colors of the season are so delicious! Here's a little sneak peek into a small flower order for a fall wedding. I created some modern/rustic petite chalkboard table number vase arrangements and bouquets. Warm tones of chocolate, amber, peach & gray blended beautifully together. I used chocolate cymbidium orchids, chocolate cosmos, soft peach carnations, burnt orange mums, wax flower and calla lily.

I had the pleasure of creating a print good suite for a Chicago wedding a few months ago. The couple picked a lovely color scheme of lavender and gray, accented with gold. Their vision was vintage with a touch of whimsy. I created signs, table numbers, ceremony programs, & escort cards that tied in with their original invitation (designed by the Bride's cousin). I really love this color combination! Here's a little peek into the lovely details:

Invitation designed by the bride's cousin (displayed in a frame during the wedding) - deliciously letterpressed! I love the simplicity and elegance.

Here's what I came up with:

A Luxe Filipiniana Dinner Party

A few weeks ago I hosted a bridal dinner party for my good friend Jackielyn. Inspired by her (and my own) heritage, I challenged myself to design something fresh - aka a style you haven't seen in any design blogs. "Luxe Filipiniana" is my interpretation of the glamorous side of Filipino style. It's a modern blend of Spanish opulence and rustic charm.

Details

Most people think of coconuts and beautiful beaches when they think of the Philippines. I wanted to emphasize the more glamorous side of our culture. We're also known for our amazing hand crafted goods, natural resources, and (thanks to over 300 years of Spanish occupation) we have a very rich eclectic style that's evident in architecture, fashion, and art. I tried to translate this style with the use of gilded embossed paper that evokes meticulously carved art and furniture, wood grain card stock, crocheted lace, intricate "doily" edging, and some "capiz" accents.

Location

I love the capiz chandelier and vintage mirrors at Intramuros! The Filipino restaurant lent the perfect backdrop to our theme.

Flowers

I kept the flowers modern and understated - I used bougainvillea in a burnt orange hue, set in crystal cubes. It was unexpected and fresh! Popular local flowers in the Philippines are orchids, hibiscus, and jasmine. But for some reason I always think of home when I see Bougainvillea - lots of Filipino homes have large trellises or walls fully cloaked in them.

The Food

Chef Cocoy whipped up some ahh-mazing dishes for the party! For starters, everyone was served a refreshing summer salad of mangoes, shrimp, and tomatoes. Dinner consisted of hearty traditional Filipino "comfort food" dishes. And for the grande finale - dessert, we had "Bibingka" souffle (a more fancy version of a popular rice cake), "turon ala mode" (deep fried phyllo-wrapped bananas), and a little buffet of cupcakes (tropical flavors), mango bars, and silvanas (a buttercream and cashew wafer pastry).

I had a blast putting this event together and designing the details! It was great digging back into my roots and learning how to translate my heritage into something chic, fresh, and inspiring.

Jackie & AJ: Modern In Yellow & Gray

I designed some simple centerpieces and print goods for Jackie and AJ's wedding reception in San Diego. For the flowers, I combined bright pops of yellow and lime - tulips, craspedia, hydrangea, bells of Ireland, and dianthus balls in white glass cylinders. For each table, I created a 3-in-1 mini booklet that served as the table number, menu card, and guest book. The escort cards coordinated with the booklet design and features two styles- a graphic floral and a lattice pattern.

Jackielyn & AJ: Personal Flowers

Over the weekend two of my most favorite people got married in San Diego! Jackielyn and AJ are part of our extended family- and one of the sweetest couples I know. They're truly a perfect match in every way possible. I am so honored to have shared their special day with them. They had a wonderful ceremony at the USD Immaculata church, followed by a delicious dinner at their favorite restaurant- Pearl. I created some simple florals and print goods for their wedding. Here are the personal flowers I whipped up (all in the comforts of a hotel room):

Once in a while I am lucky enough to work with couples that enjoy something a little more out-of-the-box with regards to design. Jackielyn is super stylish, so I wanted her bridal party to carry special florals that complement her fashion-forward personality. For the ladies in the entourage, I came up with fresh floral clutches:

The bridesmaids wore gorgeous dresses in a golden yellow hue. The silver-gray clutches adorned with white and purple tulips, and yellow craspedia (billy balls) really pulled the entire look together. The great thing about these are they are chic, functional and re-usable. I designed them in a way that the flowers can be removed and the purse can be used again. The ladies appreciated how they didn't have to worry about where to stash their essentials!

After the wedding, Jackielyn carried her own bridal clutch in a champagne hue, adorned with cream roses. More amazing photos of this wedding coming soon!

Luxe Filipiniana

Personal challenge: design a print good suite inspired by my cultural heritage.

I designed this print good suite for a dear friend's bridal shower. "Luxe Filipiniana" is my interpretation of the glamorous side of Filipino style. It's a modern blend of Spanish opulence and rustic charm.

Little Spaces: Natalie's Garden

And....we're back!! I've had a busy past couple of months and the blog posts have surely piled up. Lots of projects are in the works, and I can't wait to share bits and pieces of them in the next few months.

Here's something fun and light to start with - Natalie's corner of the house! My little princess' play space is coming along (finally!) with a couple of DIY projects here and there. After two years of neglect, we are slowly transitioning her "nursery" into a playroom. The room was never finished since she arrived a bit too early and then we found that having her sleep with us was more practical. Eventually the nursery became a storage room/walk-in closet and the family's favorite dumping ground. I completely lost it one day when I came home and just couldn't stand all the toys cluttered around our house. Natalie needed her own little nook, where she could learn how to put all her things away.

A few things about the space:

1. The Grass is always greener....

Our house was built in 1980, and along with it came deep green wall-to-wall carpeting. The entire first floor has been replaced with light hard wood - however due to time and budgetary constraints, we decided to take on the second floor slowly. Hence, the green carpets. I'm sure it was amazing back in the day - but I wasn't feeling it. After a long and hard decision, we decided to just give the carpet in this room a good deep cleaning and basically live with it till we could move along with renovation plans. Well here's a perfect example of making lemonade when life gives you lemons - or should I say making "grass" when life gives you green carpets! The room came together over time and slowly turned into a little vintage + contemporary "garden"- inspired play space. Before Natalie was born, I had painted the walls this lovely soft gray hue and had already sewed and installed the yellow drapes. About a year and a half ago, I stumbled upon a wonderful wall decal kit in the clearance bin at Target - SOLD. It took me five minutes to compose a "scene" and stick 'em all up. It's amazing what $5 can do to a room- and to green carpet! It's not just green anymore, now it's "grass". The color has really grown on me (pun intended). I actually love how it gives the perfect pop of color and pairs really well with the room's muted scheme. Lesson learned: work the challenge instead of eliminating it - almost anything can work given the right treatment.

2. Get what you want....

I got these chairs at a super discount store a year ago. They were cute - but not exactly what I wanted. The plastic leather was definitely a breeze to clean up - but it just looked too "office-y" and dull for a little girl's room. I had them reupholstered with some leftover fabric from a previous project, painted the legs, and got exactly what I wanted - a comfy cozy chair that was chic enough for mom, yet pretty enough for the princess.

3. Another person's trash......

A couple of things in her room are reused and re purposed:

The two gray bookcases were featured in a previous post. I painted them and lined them with a moire-type of paper - see more of the before and after here. They're the perfect solution for toy storage and display - everything is within Natalie's reach and she can sort all her toys into the fabric bins.

I wanted to create a little seating area for Natalie. We had two Ikea footstools sitting around the house, so I positioned them side-by-side and created a little banquette sandwiched between the two bookends. Bonus: these footstools can store more toys inside! Large fluffy throw pillows finish off the banquette and are great to lay on the floor for lounging or story time. The play table was a huge bargain from Pottery Barn - on clearance, with additional savings from my Design Trade discount. The banquette area gives the room a custom "built-in" look.

To accessorize the space and add more storage, I picked up baskets and old trunks/makeup cases at thrift stores, flea markets and vintage fairs. I also scored a lovely play tea set, kitchen and food sets, and books. For the artwork - I framed and displayed some of Natalie's own creations.

Natalie loves her room and enjoys hosting garden tea parties. It's going to grow with her needs, which is why I had to be thrifty and crafty. I think it can transition from kiddie play space to a tween's bedroom wonderfully without much work!

Happy Fourth of July!

There's nothing like getting together with your closest friends and having some fun in the sun! We love to spontaneously plan picnics throughout the year - specially on gorgeous SF weather days. This year we hit up one of our fave spots close to the water. I couldn't resist and brought along a few things to dress up our little BBQ. It was casual and festive - just great food, sublime weather, and awesome company!

For gatherings like this, I like to plan out one or two "focal" gathering spots to dress up. This is a great way to add touches of decor without going all-out and over-the-top cheesy. Thoughtful little details here and there make a big statement, and you can always achieve this without spending a lot. Here are the five things I purchased (yes, I didn't even craft a thing) that gave a simple picnic a modern casual americana look:

1. Trader Joe's "Vintage Cola" - red, white, & blue - 'nuff said!

2. Reusable stripey straws from Dollar Tree

3. American flag banner from Cost Plus World Market

4. "Newsprint" food wrappers (for the burgers) from Cost Plus World Market

5. Pack of 3 flags from Target

Everything else I already owned. It really boils down to how you style everything together. We all pitched in some home made goodies and had a no-fuss amazing lunch. I prefer gatherings like this over any fancy sit-down meal!

Sweet Summer Treats

Summer is finally here! I've been super swamped with work and life that my little blog here hasn't gotten much love lately. Here's a little something colorful, sweet, and fun to start the weekend with! I know, I know, another edibles post - in the past month I've frosted a lacy cake, made custom ballet-inspired cookies, and now more sweets. I promise I'll get back to the actual design stuff when I've recovered from this need to be in my kitchen.

I wanted to make them more special, and decided to try something new. She loves ice cream, so why not combine the two? Here we have a fun new twist to two favorite desserts - the non-melting, super easy and fun to make Ice Cream Cupcakes (aka cupcakes baked in cones).

I had so much fun making them, and they were a huge hit at the party!

Tutus and Toe Shoes

It's been crazy these past few weeks here at the studio! It was so nice to wind down this past weekend and spend some quality time with my family and friends. As you all know by now, I'm a proud mama and never hesitate to share projects and photos that are all about my little one. Sunday marked my first official stage mom experience. It was Natalie's first dance recital, and I couldn't help but make it just a little bit more special and memorable for her.

I baked and decorated some cookies from scratch - some toe shoes and tutus! This was a last minute decision, and I didn't have any cookie cutters for what I wanted to make. I was left with no choice but to hand cut each cookie with a knife. Yup! Now that I think about it, it's really a perfect example of what I do - custom, unique, hand-crafted....made with love! We handed these treats out to Natalie's ballerina buddies and to friends and family that made it to the show.

At the end of her performance, we gifted her with a little "pretty in pink" ballerina bouquet I pulled together. English garden roses, lisianthus, and lotus flowers in blush hues - all tied together, wrapped and adorned with a "Bravo" medallion. Natalie really stole the show and every one's hearts!

The garden roses are so lush and ruffly- they remind me of tutus!

This is all inspiring me to style a ballerina shoot! Hhhhhmmm.....

One Sweet Year!

My my my my...... one year just flew by! A year ago today, this blog was born. I didn't realize it then, but it was the start of something wonderful. Aside from it being a great marketing tool for the studio, it was the perfect outlet. I needed a little spot in my crazy world where I could go all-out and talk about my ideas and projects as well as share anything beautiful and inspirational.

What I didn't realize then was that this little blog would end up being the perfect classroom. I can't tell you how much I've learned. It's challenged me and kept me on my toes. Technically speaking - I've taught myself basic html, photography, and I've kept myself up to date with all the design programs. Throughout the year I set up shoots for this blog that are somewhat like "exercises" in design and prove to be great practice in terms of styling and exploring beyond what's comfortable. It's also my personal "progress report"- where I can view what areas in my projects could be improved. Not to mention - I've brushed up on grammar and spelling. Writing is not one of my strongest skills.

Here's a mini cake/styled shoot I created in honor of this blog!

As usual I had to improvise due to lack of time - the actual "cake" is plastic, which I then frosted to the right size and shape before adding the ruffles. The TJD blog birthday cake wouldn't be complete without flowers. I used some natural and gold balsa wood flowers clustered on top - quick topper! I've been dying to get back in the kitchen and work with sugar. I've decorated a ton of cupcakes and cookies, but this is my first cake. A few months back, I fell in love with an image of a ruffly layered wedding cake - it's been in the back of my mind ever since. Today I taught myself how to pipe those ribbons and it turned out pretty..... sweet!

Today's post is a perfect example of how this blog keeps me going. I could have just said "Happy blog birthday", found a random photo of a cake and slapped it on this page. But no, that's just not how I do things. This blog is a big part of TJD and just like every project I take on - it deserves nothing but the best from me.

Thanks to everyone that shared their love and support for this blog and TJD this past year! I draw a lot of inspiration from you!

Vintage Finds: Lovely Table Surprise

Another lovely vintage find! I am so in love with this table I scored a few months ago during one of my vintage runs. I was like a kid jumping up and down in a candy store when I spotted it from a thousand feet away. I had to have it and told the manager I was purchasing it even before I asked for the tag price. The wonderful thing about it aside from the gorgeous details? It's not just a table. After examining it, I found out it was hiding something I've been meaning to buy - a sewing machine! That's right - not only would it be a lovely nightstand or dresser... it was also the perfect craft room essential. Up until now I've been hand sewing all my projects. Yes, even my Natalie's cupcake and Chanel costumes! Another great thing? It still actually works! Nothing excites me more than something beautiful, vintage, and functional.

I have a little inspiration shoot lined up because of this piece! For now, here's a mini styled backyard shoot featuring a lovely ranunculus arrangement in one of my vintage milk glass vases and silver compote.

Dress Inspired Bouquet {Part 2}

Super thrilled to be featured on Style Unveiled again today! In a previous post I talked about the dress I chose for the bouquet challenge. Here's the bouquet I designed, inspired by the gorgeous dress from BHLDN.

A little description of what I created:

I dreamed up a rustic chic bride that wanted something a little more eco-friendly than the typical bouquet. Her bouquet consists of Balsa wood flowers with fresh dusty miller. The wood is eco-friendly and a lovely rustic element. It contrasts the soft ruffly lace, and at the same time plays up the dainty and feminine aspect of it. To add a vintage glam look, a few balsa buds were painted gold - a little touch inspired by the dress' gilded details.

We had no boundaries with regards to creating our designs, so I went a bit out of the box and didn't use all-fresh flowers. Instead I used fresh greens of dusty miller and balsa wood flowers, which can be reused and kept as a little wedding keepsake. I'm so honored to have been asked to take part in this super fun project! The ladies over at Style Unveiled are such an awesome team and sure know how to come up with fresh, inspiring posts for their readers.

Weddings: Classic Black and White

You know that LBD (little black dress) that every woman should have? That one staple that's classic, elegant, and oh-so flattering? Well there's also a wedding version to an LBD- a CBW wedding (classic black and white wedding). It can be modern, traditional, eclectic - you name it. It will always be a favorite color scheme because it can be bold and masculine and at the same time, feminine and chic. Think of that timeless Black and White movie that's filled with so much character- where the cinematography and production elements come together so well to tell a story that you don't even know or care what color of dress the leading lady is wearing. You're more than satisfied with the wonderful storyline and absorbing every detail that was so cleverly executed.

You would think that a wedding based on two of the most simple or basic colors would be the easiest to design - well it's actually the most difficult. If not done right - it can look dull and uninviting (I've seen downright scary weddings in black and white). Understandably, most people are also not bold enough to dip into the BW scheme because they have a fear of it being "washed out". In terms of the blooms - white flowers bruise so easily, thus making them harder to work with. We also have to order a lot more extra bunches of flowers because there are more "unusable" blooms, thus increasing costs and changing floral orders into "blush" or "butter" hues, which basically means you're really not having a CBW wedding.

When my lovely couple hired me to design their flowers, style their reception venue, and create their custom print goods - I was over the moon excited. Not only are they such a sweet pair - they were a dream to work with (Not playing favorites! I've been lucky- all my couples have been amazing!). Their personal styles really came through and was evident in all the details we decided on. They're really one good-looking, stylish couple! They had a vision of a vintage-inspired black and white wedding in a traditional formal ballroom setting. One of the first words they used to describe what they wanted was simple and elegant. I wanted to take simple and turn it into Simply Sublime. Black and white immediately translates as modern, clean and pretty edgy most of the time. My goal was to create their CBW wedding that would be elegant, timeless, and chic. I had to create boundaries and stay away from anything too minimalist or too ornate. Balance was the key and a lot of little details were extremely important. Black is already a bold statement, so we had to complement it with elements that would result in something romantic. Gold Chiavari chairs against the black linens added "sparkle" to the table without literally "sparkling", if you know what I mean. Candles created dramatic mood lighting, which bounced off the silvered antique vases and mirrors. They added that extra layer of "light" and cast off gorgeous shadows. For that romantic, soft, and lush look- the flowers were done in ivory accented with hints of seafoam arranged in large pillowy bunches set on silvered vases. The ivory arrangements offset the black and somehow "lifted" the room (like a "cloud effect") and made everything dreamy. We sized the centerpieces to be substantial enough to fill up the space, yet not too over-the-top, alternating between medium-sized single arrangements and more petite clusters. The vintage feel came through in small doses - through the print goods, the vases of the floral arrangements, the checkered dance floor, accessories, etc. There were little touches everywhere that gave off a hint of old-world glamour. Pieces of the couples heritage and personalities were injected into the wedding - from the food choices to the entertainment (fun Mariachi band!), to their outfits. I can't wait to see the official photos!

Best part of the night - when the bride cried during a "sneak peek" preview of the room before the guests were ushered in. I love my job!! I fell head over heels for this wedding during the design process. I think it's a perfect example of my own personal style with regards to florals. I too dreamed of having a CBW wedding, so this one will always be one of my faves. Here's a peek into the traditional CBW wedding I designed:

Nursery Transformation: Bookcase

I'm in the process of updating my little one's nursery into a playroom. Since Natalie was born, it really hasn't gotten much use. It's taking quite a while because of my jam-packed schedule - I only get to work on it a few hours a week. First on the list was giving a pair of old book cases a fresh new look. I plan on using it for Natalie's books and toy bins.

I planned on a budget makeover. Spending a load of money on a playroom just doesn't make sense - kids grow and outgrow things so quickly! These book cases were practically free and only required a simple sprucing up to give it a designer look.

I used two cans of spray paint in a dove grey color (just a shade or two darker than the wall's). Then to give the piece a little more interest, I covered the backboard with a wonderful moire-type of "wallpaper" (adhesive drawer liners - best thing ever!). I'm extremely happy with how it turned out! It's chic and will stand the test of time. It's something that can grow with her needs.

The next project is her play table and chairs- hopefully that will be done this week! More updates soon.

Dress Inspired Bouquet {Part 1}

The lovely ladies over at Style Unveiled rounded up a handful of floral designers across the country with a fun wedding project - create a bridal bouquet inspired by a wedding dress. I was thrilled beyond words to have been asked to submit my own creation! They let us pick a gown from their lineup, which was probably the hardest part. Every gown was to-die-for!

I ended up selecting this gorgeous Burnished Organza Gown by Fleur Wood for BHLDN. It was the most unique in my book, and for some reason just called out to me. I love the tiered lacy ruffles and the gilded accent on the bust line. For those of you that aren't familiar with BHLDN - this is the wedding line of Anthropologie. Needless to say, they have an amazing vintage-inspired collection of gowns, shoes, lingerie and accessories.

I'll be posting the bouquet photos as soon as the Style Unveiled feature is up. You'll probably be busy swooning over this gown till then!

Chic Crafts: Antique Silvered Vase

I'm a huge crafter - no doubt about it. I enjoy getting my hands dirty and discovering how to create things myself. There's a thrill in DIY projects that can't compare to purchasing something already made. I like being able to say "I made that!".

My latest project left me speechless. It turned out AH-mazing! For one of my upcoming weddings, I placed a HUGE order in for some vintage-inspired vases. However, my wholesale supplier has been back-ordered, and the shipment wasn't guaranteed to arrive on time. I decided to take matters into my own hands and MAKE them myself. Antiqued mirrored or silvered vases can be pretty pricey. And considering I need a huge lot- they could have cost me more than the entire fee I charged my client for their floral arrangements. I've seen a lot of DIY instructions for these vintage mercury/silvered/mirrored vases. I tweaked the Martha Stewart DIY instructions found here. Instead of using the mirror paint, I used 3 different shades (gold, chrome, black) of metallic paint from Krylon and did a lot of dabbing with a damp cloth to get the right effect.

Antique Silvered/Mirrored vases! I was so excited I picked up one of my glass goblets and gave it the same makeover! They turned out to be great repro antiques. I have a lot more to make, but this sure is an amazing and fun project!

A Spring {Baby} Shower

Cristina, a jet-setting friend of mine recently asked me to help her design her sister Mia's baby shower. I jumped on the chance and was extremely delighted to be able to welcome the little bundle of joy and celebrate his sweet mommy. We had about a week to completely prepare since Cristina splits her time between SF and Vancouver. They had a vision of bears, blue, green, yellow, stripes, dots, and a sweet preppy look. To get the ball rolling I came up with a "Bubbles & Bow ties" concept for little "Coco Bear"( a sweet nickname they gave the little one).

I baked some cupcakes and made little ribbon "flaggies" as toppers. To tie everything together I created a logo and used it for the bubble bottles and other details. Instead of "party hats" we're giving each guest a bow tie to adorn themselves with. What better way to get them into the spirit? For the flowers, I opted to do something a little different and veered away from stuffy and traditional. This is a fun and light affair and I wanted to play up the "bubbles" by incorporating them into the arrangement. I stacked bubble vases and used beautiful large fresh mums.

Vintage Finds: White + Gold Vase

A few weeks ago I snagged this gorgeous vase at my local thrift shop. Another little hidden treasure buried under rubble! White glass with gold accents - it had my name written all over it. It's my favorite find so far ( in terms of vases). I also scored a huge find during that trip - will post about that soon, it's currently being cleaned and whipped into shape.

Letterpress Love | The Hudsons

Here's a sneak peak of a wedding invitation I had the pleasure of designing for one of my clients. We decided to go with letterpress, which is a huge trend and classic choice for wedding invitations. They are having a black and white themed wedding, and wanted something vintage inspired, simple and clean.

I spent weeks collaborating with the couple. After a number of designs, they picked this monogram style I now call The Hudson (only fitting to name it after them). I'll be developing more letterpress designs over the next few months, and will be offering them under a new Print Goods section on our website. I'm really excited to be focusing on more graphics and being able to offer these services a la carte! Some designs will have different printing options- digital, thermography, or letterpress (more details on this and the different methods in an upcoming post).

The pictures don't do the printing quality justice. There's nothing like the feel of extra thick 100% cotton paper with deeply embossed text.

Lessons In Black And Orange

Two weeks ago, Classic Party Rentals (one of the country's largest event rental companies) contacted me and asked if I wanted to sponsor an arrangement for their Open House. What an honor! Yes! I was thrilled and couldn't pass up the opportunity. This industry-only event occurs only every two years, and is basically a huge party and showcase of the the San Francisco Bay Area's best event vendors.

They sent over this board of all their in-house items that they were featuring in my vignette:

A little something San Francisco Giants inspired! Well, not officially, but I couldn't help but imagine the table was set for a Giant's World Series celebration. Fun! However, weddings are my specialty- so the color scheme was a bit more dramatic than I was used to. Not to mention, I'm just more inclined to soft and romantic colors. So here I was, faced with a little challenge. Forced to step out of my comfort zone. Not only was this the first time I'd be participating in the event- It was my first time ever attending it.

This is the classic case of rookie designer thrown into the big league. Did I mention that the vignettes next to me featured floral designers that have been in the industry for decades and have tons of experience under their belt? Ahhh! Ok so my knees were buckling and I had no clue what I was going to do. I did what I normally do when faced with the unexpected- smile, act professional, and do my best.

It's a totally different experience to design something that will be viewed and critiqued by other professionals as opposed to a client. Clients tend to pick the more practical arrangements - they want ones that allow you to see the person across the table, the ones that allow for conversation, and the ones that won't break the bank. These were my first baby steps into a big and bold industry. I decided to play it safe with something simple. There were countless ideas running through my head, but a modern round arrangement seemed like the most practical option for me. I figured making a quiet entrance was better than something extravagant that people could misinterpret.

My arrangement for the black and orange vignette featured ranunculus, roses, calla lily, and ti leaves set within a white glass vase:

"Celebrity" sighting! One of my favorite and most inspiring SF floral designers- Nancy Liu Chin, was right next door to my table. She got the red and black vignette. I adore you Nancy! She's even sweeter in person. Here we are during the morning set-up:

There is a constant learning process involved when you're a designer. It never stops. That's something I've learned working for a handful of the best. You can't be a designer if you think you know everything. There's always something new to discover everyday. When you realize mistakes, accept them, understand how you fell short, and strive to improve - it will take you to the top. Also, part of the job entails working with what you've got and learning to innovate - not imitate.

Lessons I learned through this:

1. Ask lots of questions.

2. Research, research, research.

3. There are applications where the most practical route isn't the best, in this case- I could have gone a bit bolder since it wasn't a real-world application. While I was pleased with my arrangement, there were so many ways I could have improved. I told my friend Laurel from ESLA Events that I felt like everyone went Haute Couture and I did Ready-to-wear. Maybe that's just my style, or maybe I need to learn how to take bigger risks.

It was really an amazing opportunity, and all super fun! I met a lot of professionals and had a blast with my designer friends. Can't wait for the next one!

The 2011 Oscars Ball Preview

I'm so excited for this year's Oscars! So many amazing movies nominated- I can't wait to see who takes home the golden statue and of course- see how the stars will be celebrating this year. The buzz isn't just who's going to win, who's wearing what, who's dating who - it's how they're going to party the night away. Here's a preview of what the Oscar's Governor's Ball will look like!

Of course LA floral designer to the stars Mark's Garden will be creating the wonderful flower arrangements! They've been at it for 18 years! With over 120 table centerpieces and arrangements to make, they've come up with three table themes: The Standard, Swing, and Latin - classic genres of music that each have their own unique vibe.

Of course this is the biggest party in Hollywood and every detail is planned to perfection. Case in point: this year's server's uniform.

Let the day of romance begin! Here's a lovely custom Valentine's day arrangement of pink ranunculus and white hydrangea in a large silver lacquer box - roses aren't the only flowers that say "I love you". It couldn't be sweeter paired with our little "Breakfast in Bed" tray- topped with cupcakes, champagne, strawberries and a mini "love notes" book.

Valentine's day is just around the corner! The hubby and I will be celebrating with a simple dinner date in the city. If I had the time, I would have loved to host a romantic vintage dinner for friends and family. Here's what I would have pulled together:

1. Our "Love in Watercolor" arrangements. I'd love to use it in a more traditional-vintage setting.

2. Antique mercury hurricanes from Farmhouse Wares. And lots and lots of candles.

3. Silk organza napkins from Marchesa.

4. "Spring Lark" dinnerware collection from Marchesa.

6. French envelope tray from Jayson Home and Garden. The perfect love letter!

7. Bee pattern tray from Jayson Home and Garden. What's sweeter than honeybees?

8. 1950's metal chairs from Drake, at 1stDibs. I fell in love with the chartreuse and the chair's simple yet graceful form.

9. 1950's gold vermeil and "capiz" (mother-of-pearl) dining table from Billy Hayes, at 1stDibs. I'm a big fan of anything capiz- it's from the motherland and is just too darn gorgeous for words.

Love In Watercolor: Part 3

We wanted to include a fun twist by adding a guest book canvas station in the lounge area. I can't tell you how delicious those macaroons were (from La Boulange here in SF). The luxe velvet chair was a nice contrast to the soft, light, and fluffy details. A couple of Frank Gehry twist cubes and the white tulip table make for a modern setting and emphasize the artistic element in our theme.
